"He is absolutely 100 percent positive that he wins this fight", White said on ESPN's "SportsCenter" shortly after the deal was announced.

Mayweather posted to Instagram saying "It's official!", while McGregor said "THE FIGHT IS ON", on Twitter.

There will be no UFC fighters or fights on the Mayweather vs. McGregor undercard.

CONFIRMED! Following reports that Mayweather Promotions had reserved an August 26th date for an unspecified event, the fight has been officially announced.

He then split a pair of non-title welterweight fights with Nate Diaz before knocking out Eddie Alvarez on November 12, 2016, in NY to win the lightweight belt and become the first fighter to hold two UFC championships simultaneously.

On one hand, some felt as though this was a "money grab" for McGregor, considering he had never stepped inside a boxing ring with the likes of a talent like Mayweather.

Mayweather will reportedly earn more than US$100 million (NZ$138m) from the fight. "We've been in negotiations now for a while, and to be honest with you, negotiations went smooth", White said. And of course, with the fight being signed and good to go, bookies are now starting to take some serious action on the fight.

However, with McGregor's UFC plans on hold for the time being, all anyone can talk about is what's going to happen between now and 26th August.

Though Las Vegas oddsmakers have made Mayweather a heavy 10-1 favorite, the thought of the fight has excited many in the MMA world.

A win for Mayweather would move him ahead of former heavyweight great Rocky Marciano, who also retired with a ideal 49-0 career record.

Mayweather Promotions will publicize the event, which will be available on Showtime pay-per-view.

Even if the actual bout may not shape up as a great matchup, the run-up to the fight will. Prior to that, Mayweather fought Manny Pacquiao in what became the highest-grossing pay-per-view fight of all time. Conor McGregor is the bigger, stronger man and has knockout power but Mayweather is slick and one of the best ever. The only thing the Irishman has going for him is that it's been two years since Mayweather last boxed and he is now 40 years of age.
