Mayweather announced the fight on his Instagram account with graphic saying "IT'S OFFICIAL!", showing pictures of both fighters and listing Las Vegas as the location.

McGregor signed a deal with UFC head Dana White that would allow him to box against Mayweather in mid-May, and has since pushed for Mayweather, who retired in 2015, to commit to the fight. He also included photos of the two combatants.

"We have been in negotiations for a while", White told American sports broadcaster ESPN.

"THE FIGHT IS ON", McGregor tweeted minutes before Mayweather's post. The fight that will take place in a boxing ring and be governed by boxing rules.

Nobody truly knows whether Floyd Mayweather's boxing match with Conor McGregor will turn out to be a unique spectacle or an overhyped debacle.

White said the fight would be at 154lbs - light middleweight - and added: "It'll be in a ring, it's a boxing event".

For McGregor, this seems to be the biggest payday of his career as he is reportedly expecting to make more than $100 Million. "When two men step into the ring anything can happen", White said.

Ellerbe said Mayweather can't afford to take McGregor lightly. He did confirm that both fighters would be more than happy with their earnings. Initial reports indicated the Pacquiao fight generated more than 4.4 million US buys and more than $400 million in domestic pay-per-view revenue alone, with the event jointly produced by HBO and Showtime.

"This is really an unprecedented event", said Stephen Espinoza, who heads Showtime Sports, which will handle the pay-per-view. Along the way, they might even sell the skeptical portion of the public on a fight that - as even its promoters acknowledge - could turn out to be a colossal mismatch.

Not everyone will be excited to see a Mayweather-McGregor exhibition match, however, especially considering that McGregor is a 25-1 underdog.

"This is not a referendum on the sport of boxing", he said.

The bad blood between the two is definitely a thing to watch out for as this fight's hype was built from amid trash-talks and heated exchange of words.

McGregor received a California boxing license previous year, but is still waiting for his Nevada application to be approved.
