On Friday fire crews again used water to damp down the charred building as they began a third day of picking through the tower's charred remains.

"This is a deeply distressing time and my thoughts remain with all those whose lives have been changed by this tragic incident", said Commander Stuart Cundy of the Metropolitan Police.

"I have friends in the tower and they are not telling us anything", said Salwa Buamani, 25, who came with her three-year-old niece on her shoulders.

One of the confirmed victims died in hospital, police said, while 24 injured survivors are still being treated, 12 of them in critical care.

Residents have said their safety concerns were ignored, arguing their fears would have been addressed before the tragedy had they lived in a more upmarket area of London. "As you can appreciate, it's a very large building with a large number of people in there".

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince William have arrived at a west London site where community groups have gathered supplies for those affected by the tower fire disaster.

"I won't know that until we've gone through the full recovery from Grenfell Tower and we know exactly what we've got and I anticipate that is going to take a considerable period of time".

"Something's gone drastically wrong", Communities and Local Government Minister Sajid Javid told BBC radio.

Detective Superintendent Fiona McCormack said the lingering threat had also hampered the process of recovering bodies.

The visit can be seen as a response to the anger of residents from the west London neighbourhood after the British Prime Minister visited the scene of the fire without meeting victims.

"Meet the victims!" one person yelled as Leadsom was interviewed on Sky News.

Chair of the National Fire Chiefs Council, Roy Wilsher, said if the fire spread up the outside of the tower, sprinklers might not have made a difference.

Yesterday, the first victim of the fire was named as 23- year-old Syrian refugee Mohammed Alhajali.

"Mohammed undertook a risky journey to flee war and death in Syria, only to meet it here in the United Kingdom", the Syrian Solidarity Campaign said in a statement.

Simon Cowell has announced that he's planning a charity single to raise funds for those affected by the Grenfell Tower fire. The group a year ago completed a 10 million pound ($12.8 million) renovation that included new outside insulating panels, double-paned windows and a communal heating system.

Cladding on buildings across the north and north-east will be checked in the wake of the Grenfell Tower blaze.

And sorrow is quickly turning to anger over whether the building met fire and safety regulations.

Khan said one of the things the public inquiry will look into is the refurbishment of the tower blocks and whether the tower block was refurbished in a safe way.

It was fitted by a company called Harley Facades, which has put out a statement following Wednesday's blaze saying: "We are not aware of any link between the fire and the exterior cladding of the tower".
