Trump, who announced the gunman's death, called for unity.

Former speaker of the House and Trump strategist Newt Gingrich told Fox News that the shooting is part of a pattern of "an increasing intensity of hostility on the left". He has been identified as James T. Hodgkinson of Bellville, Illinois. The man's apparent Facebook page included strong criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration.

The shooting marks the first time a sitting member of Congress has been shot since Arizona Rep.

The Congressional Baseball Game, a charity event, has been a tradition between the Democrats and Republicans since 1909. The game will be played tonight at Nationals Park as planned. One Capitol Hill police officer suffered a gunshot wound and another officer twisted an ankle and was released from a hospital, police said.

Survivors said that if the Capitol Police officers had not been there they would have been sitting ducks.

"It would have been a bloodbath", said Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas.

President Donald Trump, accompanied by first lady Melania Trump, made a hospital visit on Wednesday evening.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise is still in the hospital and is in critical condition after undergoing hip surgery for injuries sustained during the shooting.

Hodgkinson frequently wrote letters to his local newspaper, the Belleville News-Democrat, complaining about income inequality, AP news agency reported. Lobbyist Matt Mika was shot multiple times and critically injured and remained hospitalized. Zach Barth, a legislative correspondent for Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas, was shot in the leg and released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon.

Lawmakers meet a tour group outside the Capitol Wednesday morning after heightened security in the wake of an attack that injured five made it more hard to get into the Capitol building.

Two members of the Capitol Police - Crystal Griner and David Bailey- were also injured. They did not say which officers fired their weapons. He has been in Congress since 2008 and represents a district that includes some New Orleans suburbs and bayou parishes. He and his wife have two children.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said it was too early to determine whether it was a deliberate political attack. "It's really raw now". "A member of the U.S. Congress got shot because they didn't like (his) political views", Ryan said. He said, 'OK, thanks, ' and turned around. "I thought he was dead", Davis said. The last time a lawmaker was shot was when Democratic Rep.

Mr. Trump was informed of the shooting minutes after it occurred. "He never did anything", Brennwald said. Authorities also were going over a cellphone, computer and camera taken from Hodgkinson's white van, which was parked near the ballfield. They are investigating whether they were obtained legally. Earlier Thursday, Republican lawmakers met behind closed doors to share reflections and pray. Officers in Scalise's security detail wounded Hodgkinson, who was taken into custody and later died.

About 20 people were on the field at the time, many catching fly balls from batting practice, and when the gunfire started, players and onlookers took cover in dugouts, under a sport-utility vehicle or in the open on the ground. Scalise was hit, and crawled out of the infield, leaving a trail of blood, colleagues said.

The gunman had a rifle and "a lot of ammo", said Sen.

They're plodding ahead, hopeful for action but pragmatic enough to know that the latest shooting doesn't dramatically alter the dynamics of their uphill battle.

The House used a voice vote Thursday to approve a resolution lauding the Capitol Police for protecting lawmakers and stating that "violence has no place" in society.

Virginia's Democratic governor, Terry McAuliffe, urged gun control measures, while Representative Tim Ryan told reporters that Washington politicians needed to cool their rhetoric.
