India set to celebrate Int'l Yoga Day

THE UN Headquarters here was lit up with the word "Yoga" in commemoration of the third International Day of Yoga.

Consul General Riva Ganguly Das led the Yoga Day celebrations at the Consulate premises on Monday and participated in the yoga and Art of Living (AOL) sessions.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be reaching Lucknow this afternoon on his two days' visit to state capital". Actor and activist Anupam Kher, who turned on the light show, said: "It's great, great feeling, personally for me as an Indian, as a citizen of the world and (with the global recognition of) yoga today". "NY is the crossroads of the world and in its fast-paced life, we feel that yoga has much to contribute", Das told PTI.

Indian officials at the embassies in foreign countries too have geared up to celebrate the day and have been organising Yoga Day celebrations ahead of the main event.

Reports said the rehearsals for the day have already began and were going on in full swung on all the designated places within and outside India.

Das will also attend yoga celebrations at Times Square on Wednesday where thousands of people descend on one of the most iconic American destinations and practice yoga.

Chef de Cabinet of the UN Secretary General Maria Luiza Ribeiro and President of the General Assembly Ambassador Peter Thomson are special guests on the occasion.

In commemoration of the day, the United Nations headquarters have been lit up for the second year in a row with images of yoga postures. Students from schools, colleges, universities and various youth organisations such as NYKS, NSS, residents welfare association and civil society organisations will participate in the programmes.The government has directed all district collectors, heads of departments, heads of public undertaking and autonomous bodies to hold a mass yoga demonstration at the state, district, block and panchayat level on June 21. Chidanand Saraswatiji, Bhagwati Sarawastiji, Sivadasananda, Keith Mitchel, a yoga practitioner and former US National Football League star, Stanton Kawer, a US business executive, and Kher are the scheduled speakers.
