Iran Missile Strike Missed Target — Times of Israel

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said Monday that "unlike others, Iran doesn't buy security and stability".

While Iran fights ISIS in Iraq, it rarely does so in Syria, where it has been mostly expending its resources on fighting the Syrian rebels.

Iran's Fars News Agency stated the missile was a Zulfiqar, a short range, solid fueled ballistic missile. "Their achievement was less than what was reported in the media..."

A Daesh weapons and munitions cache in northern Dayr al-Zawr was "precisely struck and completely annihilated", the statement said, adding that several tanks, military vehicles and suicide cars and a huge number of long-range missiles were destroyed.

Israel and Iran are bitter enemies.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard is warning Islamic State militants that missile attacks launched into eastern Syria the previous day can be repeated if the extremists take action against Iran's security.

On June 7, gunmen mounted nearly simultaneous assaults on Iran's Parliament and the Mausoleum of the late Founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini.

The Syrian army said the jet was shot down while flying a mission against Islamic State group. The Bahraini cleric wrote religious justifications for the enslavement of hundreds of women from Iraq's Yazidi minority and helped establish the IS branch in Libya. He rose to be one of the extremist group's leading ideologues.

Since the shooting down of the Syrian plane, Russian Federation has stopped coordination with the U.S.in Syria and threatened to shoot down any planes from the USA -led coalition that it detects west of the Euphrates river.

"In many areas, including underground, marine, air, space and intelligence and...technologies, we are competing with the arrogant system", Baqeri said.

However, Spokesperson for the US Central Command Colonel John Thomas said Islamic State terrorists were not present in the Ja'Din village and that it was controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces.

The U.S. has also fired on Syrian government ground forces in the east on two occasions in just the last month.

It said the latest contribution brings the total funding from the EU Trust Fund for UNICEF's work on the Syria crisis response to almost €200 million ($223 millions). ISIS forces now surround an estimated 200,000 people in the province, which is held by the Syrian government. The truce was meant to be extended but now appears to have collapsed.

"The situation is back as it was in Daraa city and fighting is ongoing", said Daraa-based opposition activist Ahmad al-Masalmeh. He is blaming the government for the truce's collapse.

Iran has been battling ISIS in Syria for years, offering military assistance to the Assad government through the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and its Hezbollah offshoot. The conflict quickly descended into a civil war, which has since left at least 400,000 people dead.

Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard, a paramilitary force in charge of the country's missile program, said it launched six Zolfaghar ballistic missiles from the western provinces of Kermanshah and Kurdistan.

"This revolution and the [Islamic] establishment, which came about [in Iran], have been faced with serious hostilities since their inception", Ayatollah Khamenei remarked.

It was not known what exactly was hit and Iran has provided no details. Iran's firing of rockets over sovereign borders, instead of relying on military assets it already has inside Syria, also raised questions about its motivations - whether it was trying to send a message about its capabilities and boldness to the US, Israel, and Saudi Arabia as well as to ISIS. While Iran has other ballistic missiles it says can reach longer distances, Sunday night's launch appears to mark the longest strike it has launched overseas.

Coordination with the Assad regime comes as no surprise, as Iran and Syria are close allies.
