Islamists promised new attacks in Iran

Iran's Revolutionary Guards had earlier accused Saudi Arabia and the U.S. of being behind the attacks.

Saudi-Iranian friction has intensified since Mr. Trump took office in January. They landed in waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan, where US aircraft carriers USS Carl Vinson and USS Ronald Reagan participated in joint exercises with the South Korean navy that ended earlier this week.

Iran's leaders sought to play down the attacks, with neither President Hassan Rouhani nor supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei commenting by early evening.

Iran's foreign minister said the attack will strengthen the resolve of Iranian people to fight terrorism.

"We don't know this".

Trump's first overseas visit to Saudi Arabia last month positioned the USA firmly on the side of the kingdom and other Arab states in their stance against Iran. That initial statement did not include Trump's allegation that Iran sponsors terrorism.

Iran has for decades topped the State Department's list of terror-sponsoring states, and its agents and proxies have been implicated in atrocities around the world. "Some coward terrorists infiltrated one of the buildings of Parliament".

The attackers took a number of hostages and at least one detonated a suicide bomb.

By choosing the burial site of Iran's revered revolutionary leader, and the national legislative forum, the attackers picked highly symbolic targets. "The fact that Islamic State has claimed responsibility proves that they were involved in the brutal attack", said the statement, cited by Reuters.

The unusual attacks in Iran prompted the Interior Ministry to call for an urgent security meeting, according to the state-run IRNA news agency. "We will remain, God willing", according to The Associated Press. Khomeini, who died in 1989, is a towering figure in Iran who led the 1979 Islamic revolution that toppled the Western-backed shah and became its first supreme leader.

"The Iranian nation will go forward", he added. "Instead, we'll work so that the battle is for them in Iran".

"World public opinion, especially in Iran, sees the fact that this terrorist act was perpetrated soon after the meeting of the USA president with the heads of one of the reactionary regional states that has always supported ... terrorists as to be very meaningful", the statement read.

The IRGC vowed "not to leave unanswered the shedding of innocent blood".

Therefore, he noted, it is inevitable that sooner or later their groups are attacked by security forces everywhere around the world, so they decide to carry out suicide attacks before they are caught. He did not elaborate but said Tehran is safe and police and other security forces are deployed and closely monitoring the capital.

Like neighboring Saudi Arabia, the UAE has been deeply critical of Iranian policy.

The U.S. statement of solidarity with the attack's victims is notable because of the deep distrust between the U.S. and Iran.

Iran is a key fighting force against Daesh and other groups in Iraq and Syria.

"This is definitely surprising", said Middle East expert Anam Vakil.
