The Post's report was confirmed by five anonymous sources, and Trump himself tweeted on Friday that he was being "investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!" But Sen. Marco Rubio said Sunday that he does not expect Trump to seek to fire them.

Barr also called the obstruction investigation "asinine" and warned that the special counsel risks "taking on the look of an entirely political operation to overthrow the president".

Speaking on NBC's "Meet the Press" Sunday, attorney Jay Sekulow said the "president is not under investigation by the special counsel". So which is it?

"If the president is innocent, why is he afraid of the investigation?".

"I don't appreciate you putting words in my mouth when I've been crystal clear that the president is not and has not been under investigation", he said.

Rosenstein, in an appearance before Congress on Tuesday, declined to answer a question about his memo recommending Comey's firing by saying it could be part of the special counsel's investigation.

"You don't know", the Fox News host exasperatedly noted.

"As he helped introduce Trump here Friday on a podium bearing the presidential seal, Rubio spoke in a volume and cadence reminiscent of the speeches he delivered as a candidate for president", the Post reported.

Painter supported Hillary Clinton for president past year. Democrats and progressives decried what was done to the Clintons. He pretends there has already been a finding that there was no collusion between anyone involved in his presidential campaign and the Russian attempt to meddle in our election.

President Donald Trump angrily decried as a "distraction" the "witch hunt" against him Sunday, as his lawyer insisted the USA leader was not under criminal investigation in the sweeping probe of Russian meddling in American elections. All this only six months into the new administration-what's to stop Mueller from wandering as far afield as Starr did in the years to come?

Several White House officials and Trump associates insisted on anonymity in order to discuss the president's views of the unfolding investigation.

He sits on the Senate Intelligence Committee, which is conducting its own probe into Russian election meddling. But Rosenstein, too, may ultimately have to hand off oversight given his role in Trump's decision to fire Comey.

That would not solve his problems, of course.

Wallace leaped at him for that: You just admitted that the special counsel is investigating Trump after claiming that there is no investigation! Trump fired Comey in early May.

Yet Donald Trump is used to firing subordinates who don't get the results he wants. "Witch Hunt." He appeared to be referring to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. President Trump fired James Comey to impede or end that investigation.

Peter Carr, a spokesman for the Mueller team, declined to comment.

Mueller's hires have experience in complicated investigations, including Watergate, Enron and Mafia prosecutions.

Trump also reportedly asked Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and CIA Director Mike Pompeo to intercede with Comey on the Flynn case, then later asked Coats and National Security Agency chief Mike Rogers to state publicly that Trump was not personally under investigation. If a Comey could throw someone like Martha Stewart behind bars, a Mueller will find grounds for putting someone in Trump's orbit in jail.
