Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said Butt was known to the security services, but there was no evidence of "attack planning".

May faced a barrage of questions Monday on deep cuts made to police numbers in the United Kingdom while she was Home Secretary.

They drove their hired van into pedestrians on London Bridge before stabbing people in the area around Borough Market. Khan and Dick were briefly heckled by a man who called for more police to be put on the streets. Besides the dead, dozens more were wounded by the men, who wore fake suicide vests to make themselves look even more imposing.

May, under fire because of three major attacks in Britain in the last three months, said Corbyn wasn't fit to safeguard Britain's security at a time of heightened threat.

The knife-wielding attackers appeared to be leaving the restaurant where Candice Hedge was hiding under a table when one of them spotted her, returning to slash her throat, the 34-year-old waitress' father told an Australian newspaper.

"At 22.08hrs on Saturday, 3 June, a hired white Renault van travelled north to south on London Bridge and mounted the pavement, which collided with pedestrians before they abandoned the vehicle".

Prime Minister Theresa May came under pressure from the media and the opposition Labour Party on Monday over cuts to police funding during the years when she was interior minister. May insisted that her record was sound, saying that she had introduced a raft of anti-terror legislation as Home Secretary.

But May defended her government's stance on the issue, saying that her Conservative government had protected police budgets.

During that time, police numbers have dropped by roughly 20,000 officers, and the number of armed officers has fallen as well.

Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the main opposition party, called on May to resign over the issue, saying earlier that "you can not protect the public on the cheap", and promising to recruit another 10,000 police officers if he is elected into power.

Canadian national Chrissy Archibald, 30, is the first victim to be named.

Twenty-one of the 48 people injured in the attack remained in critical condition late Sunday.

A statement from Mayor Sadiq Khan's office said the vigil is being held this morning at Potters Fields Park, an open space which surrounds City Hall on the River Thames near Tower Bridge.

The articles, the posting of the video, and the text that accompanied it - which labelled London Mayor Sadiq Khan an "embarrassment" - all came in the context of a high-profile dispute between Khan and Trump.

"I am angry and furious that these three men are seeking to justify their actions by using the faith that I belong to", Khan said.

The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militant group, which is losing territory in Syria and Iraq to an offensive backed by a US-led coalition, has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Two of the three men shot and killed by London police following Saturday's terror attacks have been named.

He had appeared in a documentary, The Jihadis Next Door, that aired on British television a year ago.

"Questions are arising as to how much the police knew about the three attackers", NPR's Eleanor Beardsley reports from London.

"So far officers have arrested 12 people - seven women and five men - and searched six properties, four on Sunday and a further two properties today".

"All of a sudden we saw this individual speaking to the kids. showing them how to pray".
