The approach worked. Gilbert retired 22 of 25 batters faced - keeping the leadoff man off base in the first eight innings against small-ball-leaning Oregon State - and Michael Papierski hit home runs from both sides of the plate as the Tigers cruised to a 6-1 victory in front of 15,618 Saturday afternoon to secure a spot in Monday's best-of-three championship series. Freshman Tyler Dyson is a possibility for Game 2. "I had to get Cam out. I was just sticking with my guns and going for it".

The loss ended a remarkable season for Oregon State, which finished 56-6, a.903 winning percentage, among the best in college baseball history. It was in Surprise, Arizona, against Ohio State, a 6-1 defeat that led pitching coach Nate Yeskie to print up a list delivered to each player on a piece of paper.

Oregon's Cadyn Grenier, left, tags out LSU's Zach Watson, as Watson attempts to steal second base during the sixth inning of an NCAA College World Series baseball game in Omaha, Neb., Friday. "He said after each example: It's just one game". There are countless examples just like those. "As he hit in the second half of the season, it's obviously made us a better team".

Florida won two-of-three games against LSU in late March.

Oregon State was still stinging after the game from a call in the third inning when, with runners on first and second, Steven Kwan sliced a ball down the left-field line that bounced off the wall and was ruled foul.

"Win or lose, they're prepared", Bailey said.

And as we've seen time and time again now, when Papierski does get in those plus counts and sees the fastball he's waiting on, they don't stand a chance.

They did in dominating fashion.

OMAHA, Neb. - Florida has yet to play a game decided by one run at the College World Series this year.

Then No. 8 hitter Michael Papierski hit home runs from both sides of the plate in a 6-1 win over No. 1 seed Oregon State on Saturday to get the Tigers to the title series. But like these Beavers, saw their season come to an end against LSU, only that was in a regional (pre super regional days). The Beavers' offense went cold at the worst possible time, resulting in their first two-game losing streak of the season.

"Bryce had been sharp the last time out and we thought that we could try to turn the game over to (Rasmussen) at the point that we did", Yeskie said. The switch-hitting junior catcher later hit a solo shot off Eisert, his 11th of the year, for a 5-0 lead in the fourth.

Florida designated hitter Christian Hicks was 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI in the win. Gilbert gets the ball because season-long starter Eric Walker can not pitch.

Faedo, who collected 11 more strikeouts Saturday night, has now thrown 27 1/3 innings in the NCAA Tournament while allowing only 1 run and totaling 44 strikeouts.

"We didn't adjust", Gretler said.

"We just needed to play up to our ability and have the kids start (to) loosen up and have some fun".

When you're a talented pitcher on a team coping with the sudden loss of one of the starters who has anchored your club all season, that comes with some confidence as well. "We couldn't get the lead-off man on". He has worked 1.2 scoreless innings over his last three relief appearances, allowing one hit with one strikeout. Should there be a third game, Mainieri said the Tigers will start ace righthander Alex Lange on four day's rest.

The Gators won two of three games in that series.

In the minutes following Oregon State's surprising elimination from the College World Series by sudden Cajun hero and LSU righthander Caleb Gilbert, legendary head coach Pat Casey was unable to put the season into words.
