Militants killed in Sopore behind attack on police party: DGP

An encounter has broken out between security forces and militants in Nathi Pora area of Sopore in Kashmir.

The official said there has been no casualty so far. As cordon was being enforced, the militant and the army exchanged fire and established a contact. Within a few minutes the encounter was over.

"The two terrorists were eliminated in a joint operation with 22 Rashtriya Rifles, 92, 177 and 179 battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)", a spokesperson said.

To avoid any incidents, mobile phone services have been blocked and schools and colleges have been closed in Sopore area, a police officer said. Around four policemen sustained splinter injuries due to the blast and were immediately rushed to nearby hospital for treatment, the source added. Police said while probing the grenade attack, they identified two persons of whom one was arrested. Abdul Rashid Lone and his nephew had stepped out of the masjid in Khanpura area, when a stray bullet injured them.
