More recently, the Canadian Press announced that Makdessi is stepping in to fight Northcutt, and the UFC has also confirmed the new bout.

Sage Northcutt recently lost his original opponent for UFC 214 due to injury, but John Makdessi has agreed to step up and fight "Super".

The pay-per-view card, headlined by the light-heavyweight title match between champion Daniel Cormier and former title-holder Jon (Bones) Jones, is set for July 29 in Anaheim.

Northcutt (8-2-0) was just 19 when he signed with the UFC amidst considerable hype. He returns to lightweight at UFC 214, hoping to notch a victory over Makdessi to get back on track as one of the promotion's brightest up-and-comers. Coming off of a loss to Lando Vannata late past year, the Canadian fighter is hoping to quickly boost his stock by continuing Northcutt's skid. He won his first two fights then was submitted by Bryan Barberena in January 2016.
