However, Newcastle have opened talks with French forward Yoan Gouffran over a new contract.

The Magpies submitted their retain list on Friday and confirmed the departures of Haris Vuckic, Sammy Ameobi and first-team utility man Vurnon Anita.

Newcastle fans feel aggrieved that Anita isn't staying on at St. James' Park and feel as though he should be offered a new deal instead of Gouffran - although one supported joked that he is better than Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has not done enough to earn a new contract at Manchester United.

Gouffran, 31, moved to Newcastle in January 2013 from Bordeaux in a deal worth £500,000.

He made 45 appearances across all competitions this season as the Magpies secured the Championship title and their instant return to the Premier League.

Anita made 25 league starts, but while he displayed his versatility by playing at right-back and in midfield, he has been deemed surplus to requirements in the wake of promotion.

Benitez told the club website: "I wish to give honest thanks to all those players who we have made the hard decision to release this summer".

"I can confirm we are in early stage discussions now with Yoan's agent to see if there might be a solution that could work for both the player and the club which may see Yoan extend his service to Newcastle United, but we will know more in the coming days", said Benitez.

Academy products Jamie Holmes, Stefan Broccoli, Ben Smith, Gideon Adu-Peprah and Daniel Lowther have also been shown the door, while Florian Thauvin has officially completed his permanent move to Marseille.

Anita spent five years at the club, with the versatile Dutchman making 148 appearances in that time.

"He is an outstanding team player, always working for the team and willing to step into whatever position he was needed to fill".

The Spaniard added: " Yoan Gouffran has been an equally committed and dedicated team player for this club, as well as a hugely popular member of the squad. "He is an excellent professional and I thank him for every contribution he has made over the years, particularly in my time as manager", he said.
