North Korea denies torturing Ohio college student Otto Warmbier

The attendees included Ambassador Joseph Yun, the US special envoy who travelled to Pyongyang to bring Mr Warmbier back, and US Senator Rob Portman, a Republican from the nearby Cincinnati area.

The meeting of top USA and Chinese diplomats and defense chiefs was held a day after President Donald Trump said Chinese efforts to use its leverage with Pyongyang had failed, raising fresh doubts about his administration's strategy for countering the threat from North Korea.

Tillerson noted that Beijing has a responsibility to pressure North Korea economically and diplomatically.

"In regards to the president's view of North Korea, I believe he represents the American people's view of North Korea right now", Mattis said of Mr. Trump.

Wednesday's discussions replace a sprawling strategic and economic dialogue held annually under the Obama administration. -China Diplomatic and Security Dialogue included Tillerson and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis from the USA side, meeting with China's State Councilor Yang Jiechi and General Fang Fenghui, chief of the People's Liberation Army's joint staff department. China's state-run Global Times newspaper said Chinese officials must be wary that Warmbier's death might push Washington to put greater pressure on Beijing, but China would not act as a "US ally" on the issue. -Chinese military co-operation to reduce risk of conflict, as well as efforts to defeat Daesh, also known as ISIS. Trump has had high hopes for greater cooperation from China to exert influence over North Korea, leaning heavily on Chinese President Xi Jinping for his assistance. Officials at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he was treated after his return from the North, declined to provide details, and his family asked the Hamilton County Coroner on Tuesday not to perform an autopsy.

Warmbier was accused of trying to steal a propaganda banner while visiting North Korea in 2015 and was later convicted of subversion. Although no official cause of death has been revealed, Otto's family blame the "awful, torturous mistreatment" he was subjected to by the people of North Korea. On Tuesday, the USA flew two supersonic B-1B bombers there in a show of force.

North Korea claimed that Warmbier slipped into a coma after contracting botulism and taking a sleeping pill shortly after his sentencing.

US and Chinese diplomats and defense chiefs have begun talks in Washington that are expected to focus on the nuclear and missile threat from North Korea.

USA and China both said in Wednesday's talks that their companies shouldn't be allowed to do business with North Korean entities covered under United Nations sanctions. North Korea hasn't conducted a nuclear test explosion as feared earlier this year but has kept up its rapid pace of missile launches.

Last week, Tillerson told a Senate hearing that China's efforts on North Korea had been "uneven". In his statement, Garrett demanded the United States take actions against the North Korean regime.

Portman said sanctions against North Korea should be tightened, WVXU reports. Washington has considered further "secondary sanctions" against Chinese banks and other firms doing business with North Korea.
