Qatar Calls on United Nations to Intervene in Violation of its Citizen Rights

Doha should also take action against individuals who are sanctioned by the U.N. and the United States and are "roaming freely" in Qatar, and to stop providing "sanctuary" to Muslim Brotherhood leaders who have played a role in "radicalizing the region".

UAE-based newspaper Gulf News and pan-Arab TV channel Al-Arabiya reported the crackdown on expressions of sympathy with Qatar.

Gargash said the four Arab states seek a "political commitment to change course" by Qatar, including ending its support for the Brotherhood and Hamas.

"It was started based on fabricated news, being wedged and being inserted in our national news agency which was hacked and proved by the Federal Bureau of Investigation", he said. But in a sign of the damage, Standard & Poor's downgraded Qatar's debt on Wednesday as its riyal currency fell to an 11-year low.

Turkey is a key ally of Qatar and is setting up a military base in the country, which also hosts the largest American air base in the Middle East.

Responding to questions from lawmakers on Wednesday, Foreign Minister Ibrahim Ghandour said he expected Gulf Arab states to overcome the crisis given the "strong relations and blood ties" between them.

"We are not ready to surrender, and will never be ready to surrender, the independence of our foreign policy", he said, warning that the dispute threatened the stability of the region.

Traders on global markets anxious that Riyadh's allies would refuse to accept LNG shipments from the gas-rich Gulf state, the world's largest liquefied natural gas exporter, and that Egypt might even bar tankers carrying Qatari cargoes from using the Suez Canal as they head to Europe and beyond.
