The number ten seed from Belgium was playing Argentina's Horacio Zeballos when he seriously injured his ankle while dashing to retrieve a ball at the back of the arena.

David Goffin made a painful exit from the French Open on Friday courtesy of a nasty fall during his third-round match with Horacio Zeballos. After wasting three set points, Goffin was facing a break point when the players engaged in a lengthy baseline exchange. Zeballos carried Goffin's bag.

Goffin, the 10th seed in the men's singles draw, looked set to wrap up the first set on Court Suzanne Lenglen as he moved 40-0 up serving with a 5-4 lead.

Scrambling to get another ball back, the Belgian found himself deep in the court and slid nearly into the back wall, tripping on the court cover that was rolled up there.

Medical staff were quick to attend Goffin and inspect his ankle, but a few minutes later the chair umpire announced that he had been forced to retire from the match.

Goffin, 26, was helped from the court by two officials and retired in the locker room. "He's a great guy. I always thought that that tarp was unsafe and not in the right place", Nadal said. Zeballos' move serves as a second memorably gracious act of the tournament, and commenters noted that sportsmanship has been a trademark of this year's Grand Slam. "One part (of me is) a little happy, because it's my best tournament".

Van Cleemput said tournament organizers will need to consider whether they can do anything to make the court safer.

The tarp did not comment.
