"Two years ago we had an issue and then the appropriate circumstances didn't arise".

Perez said Madrid were not looking to replace Navas or deputy Kiko Casilla.

"The players are very fond of Keylor and also the coach. I like Keylor Navas", he added.

Costa Rica goalkeeper Navas was criticised at several points last season for unconvincing displays which cost Real points leading to reports in the Spanish media that the club would make another move for De Gea.

The 27-year-old scored seven goals from 19 La Liga outings as Los Blancos completed a league and Champions League double.

Real were unable to strengthen their squad in the January transfer window due to a transfer ban for illegally signing minors but since the sanction was lifted, they have been linked with a raft of players like France forward Kylian Mbappe and AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

"And he seems to have very good manners".

"We're definitely following him, but I can't tell you everything we'll do". "But we're not going to talk about what we're doing", he told reporters.

As well as Donnarumma, Perez confirmed Madrid are keeping tabs on Mbappe - one of Europe's other most sought after youngsters.

A host of top European clubs are thought to be interested in the 18-year-old, and Perez confirmed that Madrid are always on the lookout for promising young players to sign.

"Zidane saw him when he was 16 years old".

"Mbappe has some very good ways and surely he'll become one of the greatest".

"We weren't on the edge of signing him, because of his age".

Perez, who has just been re-appointed as president, said the club have not made any offers for the two youngsters yet. I have to talk to [Zinedine] Zidane.
