"As you all know, shortly after 7 a.m. this morning, a gunman opened fire on members of Congress and their staffs as they were practicing for tomorrow's annual charity baseball game". "We should all be extremely grateful for Capitol Police this morning and the other first responders on the scene for their heroic work".

As the third-highest ranking House Republican, Scalise has a round-the-clock Capitol Police detail. "My thoughts and prayers are with my colleagues, their aides, and the fearless Capitol Police who were injured.

One of our security details who was shooting back ... there must have been 50-100 shots fired".

Scalise dragged himself into the outfield to get farther away from the shooting, said Flake, who was not injured.

Alexandria Police said that the victims of the attack had since been taken to hospital; the chief of Alexandria Police is due to comment on the incident later this morning.

Scalise, the House majority whip, was in stable condition at George Washington University Hospital, according to one congressional aide.

Police confirmed that the suspect is in custody and there was no longer an active threat.

At about 8:30 a.m., President Donald Trump released a statement on the shooting, saying he and Vice President Mike Pence "are deeply saddened by this tragedy".

"My thoughts and prayers are with Steve Scalise, one of the best guys in Congress, police officers, and colleagues after awful news today".

Members of Congress were practising for a game that was scheduled for Thursday night at Nationals Park, CNN reported.

Scalise is the first member of Congress to be shot since former Arizona Rep.

Trump says in a televised statement from the White House that while the political parties may have their differences, it's worth remembering that everyone who serves in Washington is here because they love the United States. Steve Scalise was on second base fielding balls and all of a sudden we heard a very loud shot.

Steve Scalise was shot. CBS News is reporting that four people were shot.

Speaker Paul Ryan tweeted - "This morning the hearts of the whole House are with @SteveScalise, the courageous Capitol police, staff, and all those who were in harm's way".

"It's pretty well known in the neighbourhood who those folks are on the baseball field", Mr Brooks said.

"My heart goes out to my friend and roommate Steve Scalise, as well as staffers and Capitol Police involved in this morning's shooting".

The news of the shooting reverberated on Capitol Hill, where security was increased and regular proceedings were canceled or postponed.

This is a fluid and developing story.
