Scalise and three others were shot Wednesday morning at a baseball practice in Alexandria, Va.

Louisiana congressman Steve Scalise has been upgraded from "critical" to "serious condition".

U.S. Representative Steve Scalise, the No. 3 Republican in the House of Representatives, showed further improvement days after being shot by a man who opened fire on lawmakers at a baseball practice earlier in the week, his lead surgeon said in a statement on Saturday.

"He is more responsive, and is speaking with his loved ones".

"The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers", the statement concludes.

Scalise, 51, spoke while lying injured on the ball field but went into shock when he was transported by helicopter to the hospital in the District of Columbia.

The gunman, 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, was shot and killed by responding officers. Doctors said Friday the bullet entered at his hip and traveled across his body, causing severe damage to internal organs.

Sava said that after being released from the hospital, Scalise "will require a period of healing and rehabilitation". Nonetheless, said Sava, "We fully expect him to be able to walk" and "hopefully run". He has undergone several surgeries since Wednesday's shooting.

As Americans recognize the incredible role fathers play in our lives this Father's Day, the holiday is said to have taken on a "special meaning" for the family of Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.).

Also suffering relatively minor injuries were two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House GOP aide Zack Barth.

Griner remained in the hospital in good condition after sustaining a gunshot wound to the ankle, according to a Friday update.
