The House gaveled back into session Thursday a day after a shooting critically wounded a top GOP leader, Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, and injured several others, including Capitol Police officers.

Democrats are still scheduled to face off against Republicans in the annual congressional baseball game - an event that is expected to bring members of Congress together for some fun and good-natured competition in the wake of the attack on the Republicans' game in Alexandria, Virginia.

Other federal lawmakers representing northeast IN offered prayers for the shooting victims and thanks for the Capitol Police, who shot and killed the assailant, James T. Hodgkinson.

Vice President Mike Pence said he visited on Thursday morning the Washington hospital where Steve Scalise, the No. 3 Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives, was being treated for injuries to internal organs, broken bones and severe bleeding after being shot in the left hip. Tyson Foods lobbyist Matt Mika was shot in the chest, and also was in critical condition.

He was in a critical condition Wednesday night and doctors said he would need several more operations.

"Everyone on that field is a public servant - our courageous police, our congressional aides who work so tirelessly behind the scenes with enormous devotion, and our dedicated members of Congress who represent our people", Trump said.

"We may have our differences but we do well in times like these in times like these that everyone who serves in our nation's capital is here because above all they love our country", said Trump, speaking from the White House's Diplomatic Room.

Scalise had been fielding balls at second base when he was shot and then dragged himself away from the infield in a trail of blood. Congressmen said the gunman had a rifle and fired dozens of rounds before Capitol Police opened fire. Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation said it was too early to determine a motive in the shooting or whether the attack was an attempted political assassination.

"Congressman Scalise is a friend, and a very good friend", Trump said. Zack Barth, a staffer shot in the leg, ran in from the outfield and landed in Williams' arms. "America is praying for you and America is praying for all of the victims of this bad shooting".

Two Capitol Police Special agents were at the practice as part of Scalise's security detail and are being hailed as heroes for taking down the suspect. "An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us", Ryan said, drawing a bipartisan standing ovation, CNN reports.
