Special Counsel Is Investigating President Trump For Obstruction Of Justice

In a second tweet a few minutes later, the president once again called the Russian Federation investigation a "witch hunt" and called the people leading it "very bad", apparently a reference to Mueller and others at the FBI.

"It could potentially have some collusion components to it", Burr said Thursday of interviewing Coats and Rogers, who appeared before the panel Monday night in a classified setting.

No longer is he merely focused on Moscow's efforts to interfere in the 2016 election, meaning he also appears to be zeroing in on Trump's actions since taking office on January 20.

Sessions called the allegations of collusion "false", "appalling", and "detestable". Forty-seven percent said they believed Trump fired Comey to hinder the FBI's investigation into potential contacts between Trump campaign associates and the Kremlin.

It was a particularly tasteless and embarrassing line of questioning for both Sessions and Rosenstein to endure.

"Consistent with longstanding Department of Justice practice", Sessions said, "I can not and will not violate my duty to protect confidential communications with the president". Trump said this after the hearings and has offered to speak, under oath, to special counsel Robert Mueller.

Democrats came at Sessions on a number of points, one big one being his dealings with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

He stated that there was "certainly nothing improper" that occurred in either meeting.

Mueller met with Sens.

Trump is now having his personal lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, handle all matters relating to Russian Federation, in lieu of the White House counsel.

Mr. Rosenstein said he would agree to dismiss Mueller only if there were a legitimate basis to do so, and an order from the president would not necessarily qualify.

Sessions declined to comment on those reports, stating only that he had "confidence" in Mueller and would not be involved in any effort, should it arise, to fire the special counsel.

"The recusal involved one case in the Department of Justice and the FBI", said Sessions, referring to the FBI's Russian Federation investigation and offering a different description of the scope of his recusal. Given Republicans' apparent lack of interest in prying the truth out of Sessions, the attorney general may never have to answer for this oversight. It's my responsibility to ensure that the department is run properly.

Rosenstein told a Senate Appropriations subcommittee Tuesday that he saw no cause for Mueller's dismissal.

He disputed that his involvement in Comey's firing violated the recusal. There was a clear partisan divide on the question, with 73 percent of Democrats backing Comey and 64 percent of GOP voters opting for Trump, but Comey was also favored to be honest by almost twice as many independents as Trump (43 percent vs. 22 percent).

And, according to the Washington Post's report, the obstruction of justice probe into Trump was self-inflicted, beginning only after Trump fired then-FBI Director James Comey.

Comey's statement before the House Intelligence Committee upset Trump, who has repeatedly denied that any coordination with the Russians took place. Comey's testimony, much to leftist dismay, did not provide a smoking gun or a gotcha moment to nail Trump.

The latest White House crisis struck on the evening of Trump's 71st birthday, after a day in which he had won plaudits for his handling of the shooting of Republican Congressman Steve Scalise.

Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., suggested that the attorney general was ducking critical questions in his testimony. There are certainly some people who believe they seized power illegitimately on the backs of Russian interference, but that's not the fundamental question facing them in the Federal Bureau of Investigation, in Congress, or in the sphere of public opinion right now. Kamala Harris of California was making him "nervous" when she tried to make him quit stalling and actually answer the questions she had asked.
