Mueller, himself a widely respected former head of the FBI, has now taken up the angle of possible efforts by Trump to obstruct justice in the investigation, the Post said.

"What really concerns me that the president is attacking his own deputy attorney general who appointed the special counsel".

Trump's Friday morning tweet - in which he wrote "I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!" The official demanded anonymity because the official was not authorized to be named discussing the deliberations. In the meeting, Trump requested that the men "put that recommendation in writing", the White House has contended, prompting Rosenstein to offer a formal recommendation to Trump that Comey be fired because he mishandled the investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails. Comey said he believes Trump ultimately fired him "because of the Russian Federation investigation".

Robert Mueller, the special prosecutor appointed to investigate ties between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign, is about to get medieval on the president.

Earlier this month, Rosenstein told The Associated Press he would recuse himself from overseeing Mueller's investigation if his role in former FBI Director James Comey's firing becomes relevant to the inquiry.

The White House has directed questions for details to outside legal counsel, which has not responded.

Feinstein also is a member of the Senate Intelligence committee, which is conducting its own Russian Federation probe.

The order from the general counsel for the transition team casts a wide net on documents that could shed light on ties between Trump's presidential campaign and representatives of Russia's government.

Akerman explained Friday that Trump now trying to change his story "helps show that he did, originally, have corrupt intent" when he fired Comey.

On Thursday night, he issued a statement lashing out at news stories sourced to anonymous officials and that he believes are causing the President and Republicans to attack the Justice Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Mueller for alleged leaks. The memo asks for preservation of electronic communications and data, telephone logs, audio recordings, videos, calendars and other items.

Trump, however, referred to the Post's reporting as a "phony" story in a tweet Thursday.

"Why is that Hillary Clintons family and Dems dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?" he asked at one point.

In his latest tweet, the president seemed to confirm he is under investigation for possible obstruction of justice.

Mr. Sessions, a senior member of President Trump's Cabinet and an adviser to his election campaign a year ago, had a series of tense exchanges with Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee during about 2½ hours of testimony as they pressed him to recount discussions with the Republican president.

In another tweet, Trump called it "the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!"
