The Washington Post has reported that in that meeting, Trump - having already made a decision to fire Comey - demanded that Rosenstein memo as a rationale.

Himes says the notion the investigation has been going on too long "is just crazy" and "we're talking about the very core of our democracy here".

"He takes the action that [the Attorney General's office] recommended and now he's being investigated by the Department of Justice", Sekulow complained.

It's all part of the thoughtless bluster that served him well as self-promotion, and got him past one business failure after another in private life.

The obstruction-of-justice investigation of the president began days after Comey was sacked on May 9, according to people familiar with the matter.

Sekulow came to the media to say this tweet was not true, and held this stance on all his interviews except for Fox News, when he changed his answer about the investigation to "no one's notified us that he is". Mr Mueller was appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and has powers to probe any matters that develop from his initial investigation. "Witch Hunt." It was the first time Trump had publicly acknowledged that he's under investigation.

Taking to Twitter last Sunday while spending the weekend at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland, Trump again referenced the "distraction of the Witch Hunt". To make it more hard, Trump's statements threaten to undercut their work. Instead of focusing on Mueller's friendship with Comey, Professor Turley defends the special counsel's integrity, but questions whether he himself ever discussed Comey's firing with the President. And the Russian Federation probe seems to be the primary reason why: Fifteen percent of Republicans say the investigations have made them think worse of Trump, while only 57 percent approve of how the president has "handled" said investigations (i.e., interfering in federal investigations, confessing to obstruction of justice on national television, engaging in witness intimidation over Twitter, et cetera).

President Donald Trump may finally confirm by the end of the week whether tapes of conversations between him and former FBI Director James Comey exist, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told reporters Monday.

In a manner that would probably please his boss, Sekulow twice made mention of television ratings when comparing the reach of a cable network with President Trump's reach on social media. Schiff cited the fact that the president at one meeting "cleared the room" of advisers and asked to speak to Comey alone. The special counsel also is said to be looking into Russian cyberhacking, potential collusion between Russian operatives and Trump campaign associates and possible financial crimes committed by those same associates.

At some point, Mueller may wish to interview Federal Bureau of Investigation senior leadership about their meetings with Comey regarding Trump, though it's unclear if this has already taken place.

He insisted Trump's tweet was not a real statement, explaining that the message was in response to a Washington Post report suggesting the president was under investigation. "Fighting this battle right now, trying to wage war with Bob Mueller right now, he needs to move on and focus on jobs and the economy and national security", said Santorum.
