President Donald Trump invoked the people of Pittsburgh to defend his climate change decision Thursday, and the city's mayor bristled in response.

Tesla and SpaceX boss Elon Musk said he would have "no choice" but to leave White House-backed business councils if Trump pulls out. Disney CEO Bob Iger said he was out, too.

"It does lessen the ability of the United States to be a major leader and important player in reducing the impact of climate change", she said.

Ford spokeswoman Christin Baker said Thursday the No.2 US automaker believes "climate change is real, and remain deeply committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in our vehicles and our facilities".

He notes that even before Trump intervened, the United States was probably not going to meet its Paris commitment, and many other industrialized countries are likely to come up short. It also goes against pressure to remain a part of the agreement, which 195 nations are signed onto. I believe the United States of America should be at the front of the pack. Even if the terms and benchmarks of the deal were nonbinding, they anxious some would try to legally demand the more.

"We have implemented a cap on carbon pollution, and we will continue working with businesses and research institutions to develop and deploy 21st century clean energy solutions", Inslee said in a statement.

"Don't be mistaken on climate; there is no plan B because there is no planet B", he said.

Republican Rep. Carlos Curbelo of Florida, who is expected to have a tough re-election in his swing district in south Florida, lobbed a series of tweets in opposition.

The president promised, however, to renegotiate the deal, saying: "So we're getting out, but we will start to negotiate and we will see if we can make a deal that's fair". The U.S., the world's second largest emitter of carbon, would be required to reduce fossil fuel emissions almost 30 percent by 2025.

In a statement, the UNFCCC said that the Paris agreement "cannot be renegotiated based on the request of a single Party". "We designed the program", Kerry said.

A formal withdrawal would take years, experts say, a situation that led European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker to speak dismissively of Mr Trump on Wednesday.

Stephanie Pfeifer, chief executive of the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change, said the USA administration was "failing to recognise what is already an inevitable and irreversible direction of travel away from dependence on fossil fuels and towards a low carbon future - with all the jobs, growth and innovation that this entails".

Former President Barack Obama used his power as president to join the Paris Accord without a vote in the legislature.

"As of today, the United States will cease all implementation of the nonbinding Paris accord", Trump said.

Trump's decision fulfills a campaign promise, but it dampens worldwide efforts to slow global warming.

"The agreement is a massive redistribution of United States wealth to other countries", Trump said.

Climate change activist Leonardo DiCaprio. "Protecting our future also creates more jobs".

The now the second biggest carbon dioxide polluter in the world after China, according to research from the World Bank.

"We are firmly convinced that the agreement can not be renegotiated", they added, referring to part of the Trump announcement which said Washington was open to negotiating a new agreement.

Eventually, the page does a whole 360 which lands back to Trump's announcement on the deal.

Trump announced his decision to abandon the Paris Agreement, which includes almost every other nation, on Thursday as part of his "America First" mission.
