Smalling endured a stop-start season last term due to injury and was publicly criticised by Mourinho on a number of occasions.

However, it is also claimed that Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino will not listen to any bids for Dier this summer as he bids to lead his team to the title next season.

Mourinho is keen to splash the cash this summer as he looks to build a squad capable of challenging in the Premier League and the Champions League. Today, Tottenham are ready to sell Eric Dier to Man Utd for £50m.... The north London club already have Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld as senior centre-back options, but will need cover to help them compete in both European and domestic competitions. A smart, pacy, footballing defender with a threat at goal, especially at set pieces, will appeal to the likes of Crystal Palace, West Ham, Everton and potentially Arsenal also, with the fee expected to be in the region of £12/15 million.

Another name linked is Swansea's Alfie Mawson, but he is in a different situation to Smalling.

As Smalling alludes to, United found consistency hard to come by this campaign, but they were at least able to win two trophies, with their Europa League success following on from the EFL Cup earlier in the season.

Tottenham Hotspur are plotting a move for Manchester United centre back Chris Smalling according to the Daily Mail, with the club keen on adding to their back line after losing Harry Maguire.
