Both players liked the course, but put their performance down to a lack of execution.

South Korea's Kim Si-Woo shot a two-under-par 70 to move to five under while 22-year-old amateur Cameron Champ was alongside him after a three-under-par 69.

No such concern for Andrew "Beef" Johnston who booked his place for the weekend and thanks, in part, to four hand-delivered peanut and jelly sandwiches on route to 73 to be inside the top-30 at two-under par. "Oh gosh, Jimmy, be good", he said to caddie Jimmy Johnson when the ball was in the air, and it was close to flawless. And if that's not enough of a traffic jam at the top, 18 players are separated by three shots to start the third round.

He was at 7-under 137, two shots clear of anyone else who played early in warm sunshine on a course that getting dry and crispy.

"The course will probably be longer". And, in chatting with fans in the stands, people mostly seem glad just to be here, watching the best players golf on a gorgeous day.

The top three players in the world will not play the weekend at the 117th U.S. Open.

Niebrugge, Talor Gooch and Kevin Dougherty, who each played at Oklahoma State, were grouped together in the first two rounds.

"We had a lot of fun out there", said Niebrugge, from Mequon, Wisconsin.

Rory McIlroy and Jason Day missed the cut at the 2017 U.S. Open. Billy Horschel was tied for the 36-hole lead at Merion.

Daugherty was 1 under going into Saturday, while Niebrugge and Gooch were 1 over.

No Mickelson and no Tiger Woods, who also wasn't playing, robbed Erin Hills of golf's two biggest names. Thomas made six birdies and one bogey on his front nine in the third round, and Hoffman birdied three of his first five holes.

The links-style layout, the longest course to stage a US Open, had the most sub-par scores in a first round at the championship, while the one-over-par cut matched the record low previously set in 1990 at Medinah.

Another U.S. Open first for Xander Schauffele.

Patrick Reed has joined the 65 club at Erin Hills. "I was a little anxious starting out yesterday and it caught up to me". "It's tough out there".

"In practice I was really good", McIlroy said. Willett had a bad opening round, shooting 9-over 81. Regardless of the weather, it didn't take long for the 24-year-old Thomas to understand the significance of his record round. "WD", Willett said on Twitter. "Working hard to get back but the body and swing not allowing it". He made an eagle on his final hole at the Sony Open in January to shoot 59, and he went on to break the PGA Tour's 72-hole scoring record. That's been the case all week at Erin Hills. After another week, it's the WGC-Bridgestone and PGA Championship.

"Next week is for totally different purposes". Jordan Spieth was even par through 12 holes and going nowhere.

The last six majors have crowned first-time champions and that trend looks poised to continue at Erin Hills where you have to look way down the leaderboard to 19th before finding a major victor in U.S. Masters champion Sergio Garcia of Spain.
