US Open spectator dies at Erin Hills

On typical U.S. Open greens, that would have run all the way off the back of the green.

Tommy Fleetwood had no problem picking out his best shot of the day.

But only for a couple minutes.

The lead, however, belonged to Brian Harman.

Fowler's seven birdies were from no more than 12 feet, including three in a row around the turn. He still had his worst score in a U.S. Open. McIlroy is headed for the Travelers Championship next week in CT, and he has three straight tournaments starting with the Irish Open through the British Open.

What a day for Justin Thomas.

During his impressive, 11th-hour quest to qualify for the U.S. Open, Stricker said repeatedly that he can still play golf at a high enough level to compete on the PGA Tour. Vijay Singh was the last player to accomplish the feat in 2003 at Olympia Fields.

No break for Steve Stricker after the U.S. Open.

"I put it in the wrong places", he said.

"We knew it was coming today", said William McGirt, who shot a 71 to move to 3 under.

Don't try this at home. Casey is tied with Rickie Fowler at 7 under for the lead.

It didn't work all that well. His next attempt bounded completely over the putting surface.

Casey finished his wild day with six straight pars for a 1-under 71 to set the target Friday.

Casey laid up in the rough on the par-5 14th hole.

Just about everything already has at Erin Hills.

But the Englishman now has a share of the lead at the U.S. Open.

The 28-year-old model announced the birth on Instagram with a sweet family photo snapped at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He missed a short birdie putt on 18.

Charley Hoffman is all by himself on top of the U.S. Open - for now.

Casey chopped his way to an 8 on the par-5 14th and shot 38 on the back nine. His best finish came in his first start at the event in 2013, when he tied for 10th at Merion. I think the more rounds I can play, I'm hopefully going to get rid of all that stuff and hopefully strip it down to what you saw the last six holes.

Hideki Matsuyama had a solid showing at the Masters in April. And he's giving the fans something to cheer.

From that near meltdown, he hit the next wedge to 3 feet and made the putt to save a 6. He shot a 69 and was at 2-under 214.

Two years ago, Lovemark tied for 18th at Chambers Bay in the Open debut for the Washington state course.

And despite not being a seasoned course, Erin Hills has an old school feel to it, with its walking-only policy, brick paths and rustic wood and stone cabins. He just has to listen to the crowd.

Day never had a chance, following his career-worst 79 in a U.S. Open with a 75.

No one has ever broken that 63 barrier in any of golf's four major championships. His third shot went over the back of the green, and it took him five shots from there, including a chip that rolled back to his feet. "I really haven't been hitting the ball well as of late". They've won major championships. Not everyone can take advantage.

Though Scheffler has some ground to make up, he's not going to spend the final two rounds worrying about how Champ is playing.

Two amateurs have made the cut. If you don't you can make bogey or double really quick. They are still about three hours away from teeing off.

But that's not all that makes the possibilities so limitless Saturday.
