With No Evidence, Gingrich Insists Comey 'May Be Under Investigation't

"The President issued that tweet on social media because of the report in the Washington Post from five anonymous sources none of which, of course, anyone knows about, alleging that the President was under investigation in this purported expanded probe".

Attorney Jay Sekulow appeared on several news programs Sunday and Monday to say Trump is not under federal investigation.

In another sign of the gravity of the situation, Trump's legal team blitzed Sunday talk shows to contradict the President's tweet Friday where he said he is already under investigation. "And I want to be very clear about this - the president is not and has not been under investigation".

In what seems an unconvincing explanation at best, defense attorney Jay Sekulow chose to defend his President by categorically denying that there was any investigation being carried out against him.

Responding to the multiple news outlets that reported the developments, Trump complained on Twitter, "I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!"

"If the reports are true that the president is being investigated for the termination of James Comey", he said, "you gotta put it in context".

"It would be a particularly unfortunate result for the Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General to both recuse themselves, after the FBI Director was sacked, leaving the investigation to be run by the Associate Attorney General-who is a political appointee but more importantly has never been a prosecutor", Ray said.

After President Donald Trump posted a cryptic tweet about tapes of his conversations with fired FBI Director James Comey, the words on everyone's lips at the White House lately are, "Where are the tapes?"

The assurances from Comey that the President wasn't under investigation were apparently no longer applicable, according to the Post report.

The Washington Post reported on June 14 that Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who was appointed after Comey's termination to oversee the Russian Federation investigation, had widened his probe to examine if the President attempted to obstruct justice, or intentionally tamper with investigations surrounding himself or his associates. He states as evidence the fact that Trump has never been notified of an official investigation into him or the 2016 election and comments made my Comey himself in which he stated clearly that Trump was in no way under investigation. Although the White House initially said Rosenstein's memo led Trump to fire Comey, the president later said in a television interview that he did so because of the Russian Federation investigation.

Separately, Rubio said on NBC that while Trump is "pretty fired up" about the investigation, he doesn't think the president "has a problem with additional sanctions on Russia" that the Senate approved last Thursday.

Meanwhile, Sekulow said Mueller does have a "sterling reputation in Washington D.C.", and if there are conflicts with people he's named to his staff, that will be addressed.

In sworn testimony on Capitol Hill, Coats and Rogers declined to speak about their conversations with the president — though it is doubtful they had any legal right to keep mum.

Some of Sekulow's exchanges with Wallace were tense and confusing, leading Wallace to say, "Oh boy, this is weird".

Ultimately, Sekulow conceded there is "no duty" for the investigators to notify the White House if Trump is being investigated "in the sense of an obligation to tell".

And Senate intelligence committee member Sen.

Cuomo went on to say that Sekulow could very easily get the answers if he wanted them, implying that if he did call Mueller he might find Trump is actually under investigation, effectively blowing the White House talking point.
