Women of Congress play softball for charity

The game Wednesday night had an emotional start when Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner, one of the four injured by the gunman, threw out the first pitch.

"The Congressional Women's Softball Game has always taken the security of our players, staff and fans very seriously", said Atalie Ebersole, the president of the event. Ros-Lehtinen was referring to Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-Fla.), who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 41, and who helped bring the game into existence nearly ten years ago.

Griner is one of three Capitol Police officers, along with David Bailey and Henry Cabrera, who helped save many lives during the shooting at the GOP's baseball practice in Alexandria, VA., ahead of the annual Congressional Baseball Game.

Tamara Keith, a reporter from NPR, won her team's Most Valuable Player award after a strong showing.

U.S. Capitol Police spokeswoman Eva Malecki said the agency "constantly maintains a level of security necessary to balance openness with public safety" and works with its law enforcement partners to "provide the level of security required to protect the Capitol Complex, Members of Congress, staff, and the visiting public".

The game ultimately raised more than $200,000 and sold more than 2,000 tickets.
