An Air India Express aircraft "momentarily" skidded off the runway at Mangalore on Sunday morning due to the weather suddenly turning bad when it was about to touch down.

It is suspected that an aircraft might have been hit it while taxing (arriving) to the apron (parking stand) after landing on the runway.

"The initial enquiry report has not confirmed that the guiding lights were damaged by IX 814 (Dubai-Mangaluru flight)", said an AI spokesperson.

In May 2010, an Air India Express plane from Dubai had overshot the runway and plunged down the cliff into a wooded valley, killing 158 people. Around 185 passengers were onboard, including two infants. No damage was found after the inspection of the plane, the official said. The aircraft skidded to the right momentarily after touch down but got back to the center line thereafter.

Air India Flight Safety Department has set up the enquiry into the incident.

The 185 passengers on board the aircraft are safe, according to Air India officials.
