The 2014 Walker Cup player from Bath shot a third round 67 in Hamburg to boost his chances of a first European Tour victory.

"I'm over the moon, I played lovely from tee to green and putted really nicely today", said Smith.

Defending champion Alexander Levy, Stuart Manley and overnight leader Richard McEvoy were also on eight under, but still on the course when play was suspended at 8.52pm local time due to fading light.

Ashley Chesters holds a one-shot advantage after the second day of a weather-disrupted second round at the Porsche European Open.

But he got the shot back at the third and back-to-back gains at the seventh and eighth - the latter after hitting his tee shot to within a foot - briefly sent him three clear.

And home favourite Marcel Siem aced the 17th to walk away with his very own Porsche.

The former Walker Cup star fired five birdies in a flawless 67 at Green Eagle Golf Club to set the clubhouse lead at nine under, with Siddikur Rahman his nearest challenger following a birdie-filled 66.

Siem's tee shot at 17 - where a sports auto was on offer for a hole-in-one - barely hit the sides of the cup on its way in, but he is nine shots off the leading pace, having carded 73.
