A 4-year-old boy was run over by a pickup truck on Ormond Beach, which is about 6 miles north of Daytona Beach, Sunday afternoon.

Witnesses saw the Deltona boy get off his boogie board and run in front of the truck, the front passenger-side tire rolling over his lower abdomen and the rear over his foot.

According to Volusia County Beach Patrol, Antonio Vazquez was boogie boarding and was riding a wave close to the traffic lane on the beach. As he drove forward, they disappeared from his sight.

Hagstrom said he felt a bump, then heard screaming.

The accident happened about 3 p.m. when officials closed Ormond Beach to vehicles because the high tide was covering the traffic lane.

The boy was responsive at the scene, drifting in and out of consciousness as his aunt comforted him.

The child was taken to the Halifax Medical Center to be treated.

Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue said the driver wasn't cited and isn't considered to be at fault at this time.
