China says upholds United Nations sanctions as North Korea trade rises

It is estimated that 1,000 U.S. citizens travel to North Korea annually.

"People here have many different opinions about the ICBM", he said.

1946 born President Donald Trump may not recall the devastating Korean War (1950-53), but the Korean Peninsula has been an important United States bastion to check the spread of unfriendly powers in East Asia since the end of the Second World War. What actually transpired has not yet come into the public domain but Mr Trump reportedly told Mr Xi: "I appreciate the things that you have done relative to the very substantive problem that we all face in North Korea".

Sounds like a war to us. Following the events of 9/11, United States focus was shifted primarily to the Middle East. 15 years later, however, the U.S. must focus once again on the North Korean problem. The armistice signed on July 27, 1953 stopped the fighting without resolution. We should have no illusions that they will solve this problem without significant changes in USA policy toward both nations. However, this is an unsustainable balancing act as North Korea is extremely unpredictable and unreliable.

As to his claim that a first strike would be suicide, does anyone think Kim Jong-un really cares? Recently, North Korea developed a missile capable of reaching Alaska.

For if the Trump administration hopes to enlist an unwilling Beijing to check North Korea's nuclear ambitions, visas for the children of China's ruling class to attend these universities offer an excellent pressure point.... Imports from North Korea fell 13 percent. Past relations show they can't be trusted.

Maintenance operations would include "the heating of pipes to prevent freezing".

North Korea has installed high-voltage electric fencing at its border with China, posing even more challenges for people seeking to leave the country or smuggle goods in from the outside world.

Economic sanctions don't seem to be working either.

North Korea's ICBM is likely a deterrent, nothing more, as actually firing one off would be suicidal.

It also conducts trade with our allies such as Mexico, France, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the Philippines, just to name a few names. Indeed, Trump and Xi have spoken on the phone on numerous occasions since that weekend meeting, discussing everything from the North Korea nuclear issue and worldwide trade to the South China Sea and the inviolability of the One China policy that has governed Washington's behavior towards Beijing for about forty years. Bank of Korea's director general of the research department, Mr. Chang Min, has predicted that South Korea's economic growth will suffer due to China's boycott.

That leaves the military option, but that's also a no-win scenario. North Korea would love to sell nuclear weapons to marginal states and non-state actors if they could evade sanctions-enforcement efforts. The country's official newspaper Rodong Sinmum cautioned against the joint drills and said they would aggravate the situation between the two countries. The US could agree to limit or completely suspend its military presence in South Korea, but this would not be a desirable move as the US wants to remain powerful in the region.
