A Toronto-bound flight was forced to return to London's Gatwick Airport Monday after a tire blew during takeoff.

Airline passengers are facing cancellations, delays and disruption after a plane tyre burst as it left the runway on a transatlantic flight.

Several flights were diverted from Gatwick while ground crews removed the plane from the runway and towed it back to the airport.

Gatwick Airport said in a statement planes are now using the airport's back-up runway.

All inbound and outbound flights have since been halted for more than an hour with inspectons still taking place on the runway.

"The current runway closure follows an earlier closure between 1.16pm and 1.45pm when the runway was closed for an inspection after this aircraft departed".

Gatwick Airport says an Air Canada flight to Toronto had to return to Gatwick after experiencing the burst tyre.

Shortly after, officials made a decision to close the airport's main runway for the rest of the day.
