Having now given back the famous trophy to the R&A, the 40-year-old can look forward to trying to defend his title at Royal Birkdale.

Wood finished fifth at Birkdale in 2008 and won the silver medal as leading amateur, before missing out on the play-off between Tom Watson and Stewart Cink by a single shot the following year at Turnberry.

Stenson will be joined by former world number one Spieth and Players Championship victor Kim when he tees off on Thursday morning. I always dreamed of winning The Open as a young man. "Maybe we can turn things around a little bit but I need to step it up quite a lot".

Harrington is in the group ahead of Stenson alongside American Pat Perez and Ryder Cup star Thomas Pieters, with Justin Rose, 2010 victor Louis Oosthuizen and Justin Thomas out at 9:58am.

US Open champion Brooks Koepka will be looking for back-to-back major successes and will start his quest alongside world number two Hideki Matsuyama and home hopeful Tommy Fleetwood.

"I know I'm not really where I want to be in my game", admitted the Swede after finishing the Scottish Open with a four-under-par 68.

World number one Dustin Johnson will partner Rory McIlroy and South Africa's Charl Schwartzel, with the group getting underway at 1448 local time.
