Gas prices on Canada Day will be cheapest in 7 years

As of the writing of this story, that number is still holding strong.

Average retail gasoline prices in NY have fallen 3.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.42 a gallon on Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 6,118 gas outlets in NY. At this time a year ago, we were paying just under 98 cents.

What's even more odd is that gas prices have been down in June compared to January.

"As motorists pack their cars in preparation for the July 4 holiday, gasoline prices continue their widespread drop, falling in all five states over the last week, as retail prices play catch up to the falling price of crude oil", said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst at GasBuddy.

McTeague added gas prices on Canada Day will be lower than they were on New Year's Day.

"The only thing that could spike prices over the weekend would be a rogue move by one of the Canadian suppliers which we saw earlier this week from Shell, where they increased their wholesale prices by 2.5 cents per litre only in Ontario and Quebec for reasons only known to Shell", he said. According to Gasbuddy, the lowest recorded price on this date was in 2010, when a litre of fuel cost about $1.01. The biggest challenge, as always when you're road tripping, is choosing the best DJ.
