German police launch manhunt after teen brings 'gun' to school

A GUNMAN has reportedly stormed a German school sparking panic and causing police to put the area on lockdown.

Pupils were told to lock themselves inside classrooms and barricade doors at around at 11:30 local time (10:30 BST).

A man was arrested in the town of Esslingen, near Stuttgart, but later released with police saying the armed man is believed to have got away on a motorbike.

Police described the suspect on Twitter as wearing a red T-shirt, blue jeans and reading glasses.

Police spokesperson Bjoern Reusch said the suspect didn't use his weapon and nobody was hurt when he briefly appeared inside the school in Esslingen, near Stuttgart.

They searched the secondary school but found nothing suspicious and asked students to assemble outside the building until they could be picked up by their parents, a police spokesman told DPA news agency.

"One person, who fits the description of the suspect was arrested inside the city. The students are remaining inside the classrooms until the end of the measures".
