Hitting the Road This Holiday Weekend? Expect a Lot of Company

The July 4th holiday isn't until Tuesday, but plenty of New Yorkers will be hitting the road today for an extended holiday weekend. With that said, AAA says pack a lot of patience in one of those suitcases.

That, combined with what he calls "an improving economy and reduced unemployment", likely means well over 44 million people are going hit the road in their vehicle or fly somewhere over the 4th weekend, up 3 percent from a busy 2016. That will make 2017 the most traveled Independence Day holiday weekend ever. "If you can travel on the holiday itself, you will see less people on the road".

Clay Ingram with AAA tells CBS42 there are several reasons behind the increase including, a stronger economy, lower gas prices and warmer weather. The state average is about $1.98/gallon. That's about 10 cents down from this time a year ago.

"The past four or five years, we've seen lower gas prices, and especially this year, gas prices are at historic summer lows", Tidwell said.
