It's Almost Time! 'Doctor Who': 13th Doctor to be Revealed on Sunday

BBC has made history with the selection of the newest star of "Doctor Who". Filming for those episodes could start as early as next year under the careful eye of Broadchurch alum Chris Chibnall, who is stepping into that position after years with Steven Moffat at the helm.

Though the show has had a host of strong female characters - from Michelle Gomez's The Master and Alex Kingston's River Song to companions like Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rose (Billie Piper) - no woman has ever portrayed the title character.

"It feels completely overwhelming, as a feminist, as a woman, as an actor, as a human, as someone who wants to continually push themselves and challenge themselves, and not be boxed in by what you're told you can and can't be", Whittaker said.

"Her audition for The Doctor simply blew us all away", he said.

After Peter Capaldi announced his exit as the titular Time Lord back in January, Whovians spent months anticipating and speculating as to who would become the Thirteenth Doctor.

What we know is that the Christmas Special will be first in-canon appearance by the new Doctor, and that this should serve as a rather-perfect springboard towards everything that could be coming up the rest of the way with season 11.

"To be asked to play the ultimate character, to get to play pretend in the truest form: this is why I wanted to be an actor in the first place".

Doctor Who fans, the wait to meet the Thirteenth Doctor is just about to be at an end.

Any last-minute thoughts as to who will regenerate into the 13th Doctor?

"The fans have lived through so many changes, and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one", Whittaker added.
