Major League Baseball trade rumors: Nationals want Sean Doolittle

Doolittle will immediately become one of the top hurlers out of Washington's bullpen following a trade that saw fellow reliever Ryan Madson head over to the National League as well. Left-handed pitching prospect Jesus Luzardo and third baseman Sheldon Neuse will be heading to Oakland.

Madson has a 2.06 ERA this season and 86 career saves as a reliever so he'd be the most likely player to close with Doolittle potentially setting him up. He offers a phenomenal 31:2 K:BB and should provide a steadying presence in high-leverage situations - perhaps with some save chances - for the Nationals moving forward.

The move indicates the Nationals realize their contention window is right now.

Treinen, 29, was originally a 7th round pick of the Oakland Athletics, before going to Washington in a three team deal that involved John Jaso and Mike Morse. "They both have had arm problems, so it could be both of them".

Rizzo has often favored an experienced closer, and Madson provides one who is plenty familiar with getting the final three outs of a game.

Daniel Murphy, who homered twice on Sunday, was also excited about the new additions. Actually, they got two.

"It's always nice to add two quality players, and those guys are really good players", he said. They also do need some outfield prospects, which the Nationals have plenty of. By mid-April, manager Dusty Baker took Treinen out of the closer role, intending to use Shawn Kelley and Koda Glover depending on match-ups. Madson is signed through next season at $7.67 million. The Nationals will have Doolittle under team control through 2020 with a $4.35 million salary for next year and then $6 million options in 2019 and 2020.

Sean Doolittle is heading to Washington.

Luzardo, 19, was a third-round draft pick in 2016 and is 1-0 with a 1.32 ERA at the Gulf Coast Rookie League Nationals in his return from Tommy John surgery on March 22 past year.

The Nationals might not be done dealing for pitchers with the trade deadline two weeks away. Luzardo, who underwent Tommy John surgery past year, has three starts in the rookie Gulf Coast League. Oakland selected the contract of right-hander Simon Castro from Triple-A Nashville. Madson and Doolittle have a combined 1.7 WAR on the season. "Not too many parks have the crevice back there like that".
