A man has been arrested over the murder of a middle-aged man who was attacked on a street.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Werburgh Street, near Christchurch in Dublin 2, shortly before 9pm this evening.

His body was found on concrete steps in North Street in the early hours of Sunday morning.

However, he died in the ambulance while being treated.

Gardai appealed for witnesses who may have been in or around North Street between 1.30am and 3am or anyone with dash cam footage of the road at those times.

The crime scene outside the Leo Burdocks chipper has been sealed-off pending a garda technical examination.

A 29-year-old man was arrested this evening and is now detained at Swords Garda Station. A number of places, including the area around a parking meter, were cordoned off.

Another shocked local, mum-of-four Bridget Carr (55), echoed those sentiments.

Gardai were interviewing members of the public in the area throughout the morning as part of their investigation into the man's death.
