"Nintendo has already said they'll increase production during the summer, so this is a chance to confirm how that's coming along", Tomoaki Kawasaki, an analyst at Iwai Cosmo Securities, said before the earnings release.

Nintendo's quarterly profit topped estimates as more people bought its new Switch gaming machine, lifting expectations for brisk sales during the holiday shopping period.

Nintendo updated its official unit sales charts for the Switch to 4.70 million units.

These numbers include digital sales, as well as bundled games. On average Nintendo nearly sold three games for each Nintendo Switch console.

Last month, Nintendo apologized to customers in Japan for Switch shortages and promised to increase production, without providing a timeline or further details. The Nintendo Switch is easier to find in the United States recently.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sold 3.92 million units, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold 3.54 million units, 1-2 Switch was in third place with 1.22 million units, and in the fourth place is ARMS 1.18 million units. The full financial statement for Nintendo's Q1 2017 is available here.

With this background, Nintendo had an operating profit of 16.2 billion yen and an ordinary profit of 30.9 billion yen against net sales of 154.0 billion yen (of which overseas sales were 113.8 billion yen or 73.9% of the total sales).
