The Panthers reached the postseason in Gettleman's first three seasons with the team, including a berth in Super Bowl 50. The move comes as a surprise despite the team's 6-10 finish in 2016, primarily because of the timing.

A wild calendar year for the Carolina Panthers became even more wild on Monday when the team announced the unexpected and wildly surprising termination of general manager Dave Gettleman. Olsen wants a new contract and has suggested he will hold out from training camp if he does not receive one.

"After much thought and a long evaluation of our football operations, I have chose to relieve Dave Gettleman of his duties as general manager", team owner Jerry Richardson said in a release. Richardson also acknowledged the timing is not ideal as the Panthers are scheduled to report to camp on July 26.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that Gettleman and Richardson may not have been getting along well, dating back to the Panthers rescinding a franchise tag offer to Josh Norman.

According to research by ESPN, this is the latest in the offseason that a team has cut ties with a general manager in at least five years.

Brandon Beane, the Panthers' former assistant general manager, was hired by the Buffalo Bills to fill their GM vacancy in June.

Gettleman served as the Giants' pro personnel director from 1999-2011 and was their senior pro personnel analyst in 2012.
