"We congratulate Paul on his Hall of Fame career, and look forward to seeing his number raised to the rafters of TD Garden".

Pierce announced last summer that the 2016-17 season would be the last in his National Basketball Association career, and that led to plenty of heartfelt moments throughout his final year in the league.

"It's an honour to have this opportunity to once again call myself a Boston Celtic", Pierce said.

A 2013 trade that routed Paul Pierce to the Brooklyn Nets has allowed the Boston Celtics to reap enormous rewards years later.

In February, in his final game in Boston, Pierce drained a 3-pointer, bringing the TD Garden crowd to a state of exuberance.

Nicknamed "The Truth" during his third NBA season, Pierce went on to become just the third player in Celtics history to be named NBA Finals MVP (2008) during his first appearance in the Finals, joining another former Jayhawk (Jo Jo White in 1974) and Cedric Maxwell in 1981.

The Celtics tweeted out a picture Monday afternoon showing Pierce in full Celtics gear holding up his No. 34 jersey.

"The organization and city took me in and made me one of their own, and I couldn't imagine ending my career any other way", Pierce said.

Over his 15-year career as a member of the Celtics, Pierce averaged 21.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game on 44.7 percent shooting from the field (37 percent from three) and made 10 All-Star teams. "I'm a Celtic for life".
