One of the rare coins that a Palestinian merchant tried to smuggle from Gaza into Israel through the Erez border crossing.

Security forces nab a Palestinian man attempting to smuggle rare 4th century coins from the Gaza Strip into Israel, a statement from the Defense Ministry says.

The suspect was detained for questioning and denied entrance into Israel.

The four precious coins were likely transported from Egypt into Gaza, with the intention of sneaking them into Israel for sale to collectors, a statement from the Ministry of Defense Crossing Authority said. Representatives from the Israel Antiquities Authority were summoned to Erez Crossing in order to further examine the items.

Last week, Israeli authorities arrested two Palestinian thieves who attempted to steal artifacts from a Byzantine-era church in the West Bank.
