Sergio Romero has signed a new contract to stay at Manchester United for another four years.

United are confident that Romero could step up and be the club's first-choice keeper if David De Gea leaves for Real Madrid, and were keen to tie the 30-year-old to a new deal. The Argentine was an important part of United's Europa League squad, which thumped Ajax in the finals at Stockholm to win the title. He had just one year left on his previous deal, but the club announced an extension on Sunday for the man sandwiched between David de Gea and Joel Pereira on the Red Devils depth chart.

"Sergio is a great goalkeeper and professional", Mourinho told United's website. He said, "He had a good season and outstanding performances, especially in our Europa League success. Sergio deserves his contract, and for Manchester United to have Sergio and David is wonderful in such an important role".

Manchester United have splashed out this summer on the likes of Victor Lindelof and the £75m Romelu Lukaku. Who wouldn't want to be at the biggest club in the world? We have great goalkeepers here and we are always learning from each other.

He has provided stability for United given De Gea has regularly been linked with a big-money move to Real Madrid and nearly left for Spain in the same transfer window in which Romero arrived. Romero holds a record 88 Argentina caps for a goalkeeper having kept his place in the team he helped reach the 2014 World Cup final despite not holding down the first team place at his last three clubs, including Sampdoria and AS Monaco.
