Sunderland linked with move for Aston Villa defender

When Elphick was brought into Aston Villa last summer from Bournemouth, he was expected to be a big player for the club.

Former Villa boss Roberto Di Matteo splashed the cash a year ago to take the former Rangers and Motherwell striker from Fulham.

The combination of these played a big role in the 13-times capped Scotland worldwide finding himself out on-loan after making just 20 appearances for the Midlands club following his £12million switch from West London. However, it didn't work out well at Villa Park under Steve Bruce.

This is why he may be set to leave as he will want to get back to playing regular football and while their West Midlands rivals Birmingham City have been interested, two other Sky Bet Championship teams have become interested in him.

But with his Villa counterpart now prepared to rebuild bridges that have previously been burnt with the Scot, it may either take a large bid to prise the 30-year-old away or the Black Cats manager may have to look elsewhere for a dependant talisman this summer.

Brighton & Hove Albion academy product Elphick has yet to feature for Villa during pre-season due to a minor injury complaint.
