A teenager found dead at the Falls of Bruar has been named by police.

A teenager has died after being pulled into an undercurrent as he tried to save a friend who got into difficulties while swimming at a waterfall.

Ali Ahmed, 19, from East London, was reported missing on Wednesday evening, prompting a major air and land rescue mission at the gorge near Pitlochry.

The alarm was raised yesterday at 5.40pm and a subsequent search operation was launched by emergency services.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "A search was due to resume at around lunchtime on Thursday".

The group are understood to have formed a human chain in attempt to save Mr Ahmed but were unable to reach him in the water.

A search for the young man, believed to be an 18-year-old from Newham in England, has so far drawn a blank.

"Our thoughts are with his family".
