No official announcement has been made, but with a release date and Craig already set, it should only be a matter of time before MGM and Eon Productions confirms a director.

Deadline is reporting that Denis Villeneuve, Yann Demange, and David MacKenzie are the three directors producers are now looking at to the direct the film.

Both Villeneuve and Mackenzie's recent films, Arrival and Hell or High Water, featured at last year's Oscars, with Villeneuve now working on the Blade Runner sequel and soon helming the upcoming adaptation of Dune (likely meaning his schedule is too busy for Bond).

Deadline are reporting that the Bond producers are working hard on that front, and have gone as far as drawing up a three man shortlist for the job. Villeneuve's 2016 film Arrival was nominated for Oscar including the Best Picture category and it won for Best Sound Editing.

Ryan Gosling in a still from Blade Runner 2049. That last point may be the biggest complication to him getting the gig, but with Dune still being very early in development, Villeneuve may be able to fit in a Bond film. He most recently directed Chris Pine and Ben Foster in neo-Western Hell or High Water, which was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.

Mackenzie made massive waves when he first hit the headlines with the 2013 English prison drama Starred Up (which was the breakthrough role for young actor Jack O'Connel). He's now attached to direct "Outlaw King", a movie about Robert The Bruce which stars Chris Pine.

The final contender, Demange, may the be the least well-known of the bunch, but he not exactly low on the totem pole when it comes to talent though.

Reports state that those directors are Yann Demange, Denis Villeneuve and David Mackenzie.

According to Variety, Demange, best known for helming the 2014 drama '71, is the frontrunner, though other directors are also being considered. And I am perfectly happy with that - with any of them, to be precise.

The next Bond film, which is the 25th film of the franchise, will release in North America on November 8, 2019.
