The union says about 4,000 production and maintenance workers should be eligible to vote.

The secret ballot election date has been set for technicians at the Nissan Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant, subject to NLRB approval.

The election will be held on August 3 and August 4.

UAW Secretary-Treasurer Gary Casteel said in the statement that Nissan is "running one of the most aggressive anti-worker campaigns that we've seen in modern USA history".

"In Canton, Nissan technicians enjoy pay and benefits that are among the best in MS, a safe work environment, and a history of job security that exceeds UAW-organized plants", said Rodney Francis, HR Director at Nissan Canton.

"In Canton, Nissan technicians enjoy pay and benefits that are among the best in MS, a safe work environment, and a history of job security that exceeds UAW-organized plants", said Rodney Francis, HR Director at Nissan Canton. "Given the UAW's history of strikes, layoffs and plant closures, it is clear that their presence could be harmful".

The UAW's representation is largely focused in northern USA states. The last major vote on union representation in the South was at Volkswagen AG's plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 2014.
